They were at it for some time. First three of them:

and then a fourth one entered the fray (in the picture above)

☺☺☺

Don't be looking for sympathy from me -- you beat me by two whole minutes! :-)

schutkleur

But she still has beaten me by 21 seconds ☺☺☺

Maybe your Californian coots really are a bit more laidback, or ours are just very hotheaded ☺

Ginni2

I told Betsy about this wonderful photo that got so few solves so she did it. Missed #1 by one second! :-)

We must just have kinder, gentler coots in southern California. :-) Or else they leave the waters by my trails before the hormones really kick in!

Hi Frank. Thanks!
You're right, territory is also a reason for these clashes. But I often have the feeling that coots will fight over anything☺

schutkleur

Really????? Your American coots must be much more civilized than ours then.
Ours fight all the time. Whenever there are more than two together it usually doesn't take long for them to disagree about something. Often I can hear the coots before I see them. They're always chasing one another.
Here are some puzzles I posted earlier :

It all depends on the number of males and females on the location.
Territory is also a major faction.
But what a great shot.

And a big brawl it was canoekaw!!!

Ginni2

They were actually fighting? I've never seen coots act at all aggressive to each other, and there are coots at both the Lagoon Trail and the Bernardo Bay Trail. The grebes are getting aggressive these days. A lot of times now when I think I hear rushing, I look over to see that it's really one grebe rushing at another to chase him (probably always male) away.

I've found one advantage to fewer solves... I'm actually on the board! :-)

canoekaw

A coot brawl.
