Ha! Indeed no flags!!!
:-)

parrotman22

Skippy, I'm glad that you enjoy your sports too! Take care!! :-))

parrotman22

I knew you would enjoy the Haka! Enjoy your end of season run up.

There are no streamers or flags in the link below!! LOL

I didn't play a lot of sports, but loved the ones I did participate in. Growing up in New England, I learned to skate at an early age, but never really played hockey. But, it is my favorite by far. I'm just amazed at how much they can do on ICE and how quickly they can react considering how fast they are going (and how fast the other players are moving as well.)

katwoody99

LOVE the Haka!!! I've saved that YouTube; so impressive!!

There's no women's football to speak of, John. From time to time, leagues have been tried but they can't be sustained. There's no organized leagues for the girls starting from elementary school up, so no pool of players, etc. The only thing you see is "flag football." You wear a belt with the two streamers on either side, attached with velcro. Instead of tackling, you pull a flag off the belt. I honestly don't know how widespread it is, but we had a full intramural league when I was in college. It was some of the most fun I've ever had!

I'll let you know when I can follow some more rugby. Our bye week is over and now we're getting ready for the final stretch run of the regular season. Big time action!

Skippy, I love your enthusiasm about sports! I'm the same way - just love the games!!

skpy

Anti-football? Really, must have me confused with another! I have a rugby sticker on my car and have been asked about it a couple of times - helping to get the word out. I, also, have a 'Give Blood, Play Rugby' shirt - not sure if that is helping or not.... That would make sense on the 7's And, I did watch the World cup last time - At least I remember watching some big contest including Scotland, Wales, England and France.... That was pretty exciting and we did have a number of the games showing. I expect our camera crews do have a lot to learn - every sport has it's quirks. I think rugby has a chance of catching on in the States. In my estimation, it is much more interesting than either baseball or basketball - really, baseball seems so slow and basketball not much more than running back and forth - too much scoring so that it seems pointless watching until the last 10 minutes!

parrotman22

Weren't you the person that was in the anti-football club!? I'm, probably, wrong!! I'm glad that you are interested in rugby, esp the 15 man version! I was saying to Kate that the camera work was too far away from the action. I've just watched a match with the Canadian national team playing and you would have enjoyed the camera work much more! The reason that you mainly get 7's is that it will be in the Olympics next year. The rugby World Cup is on next year (15 men) and you might get more coverage. It;s difficult for rugby to thrive in the States as baseball, American football, ice hockey and basketball are so strong. We need more people like you and your co-workers!! Take care!!

skpy

I have direcTV and a couple of years ago, the channel that generally shows rugby games was free for a couple of weeks. I thought at that time I'd watch and see what the interest is. I went on line to check out the rules so I'd have a basic knowledge of the rules. (Made it much more interesting!) I love it and am sorry to say that the bulk of what is shown is Rugby 7s around here, just short games but several in one sitting. I was surprised when I found the regular NZ vs USA game yesterday. Since the original interest started, I've found co-workers who play on a less than professional team but have enjoyed attending their games as well. Though, I find it's more like a mix of US football, soccer and ice hockey - bit rough.

parrotman22

I'm sure that you enjoyed the Haka (Maori war dance) at the beginning but the camera work missed a lot of the spirit so here's a short link!!

parrotman22

I'm glad that you got the chance to see some of it, Kate! The commentators were trying to inform the public about the rules. The camera work was not very good. I suppose that the producer and cameramen weren't used to doing rugby. Over here they get you right into the action; many more close-ups. I thought that rugby (if you can find it on US TV) might do you for when it is off season for your football teams. Thanks for making the effort! I've got 2 matches to watch this afternoon;-))

Women's rugby is a fast growing sport throughout the rugby-playing nations ( They are very good and physical), do you have women's American football?

katwoody99

John, I wanted to get on jigidi and chat with you during the game - but as it turned out I didn't get to watch a lot. I did record it, and I was able to watch several 5-minute spans of the game. I could already get a good feel for it, and as the announcers were pointing out, watching the very best team and players shows you what the game is supposed to be: the ideal that teams are striving for. NZ was so impressive! I could see the effort of our guys, but they just couldn't measure up. The announcers were also saying that rugby is the fastest (or one of the fastest) growing sports in the US. I can see why - it has many of the good elements both of American football and of soccer! I see why you love it!

skpy

Well, we were buried.... of course, I wasn't expecting miracles USA vs. All Black. But, what a rout.

parrotman22

No visitors here, Kate! We had the warmest Halloween on record!! Hope you get the chance to watch the Rugby. We can sit side by side and I can explain the rules to you! ;-))

parrotman22

That was a good idea, Skippy. Leave the rotting pumpkins for someone else!!

parrotman22

Ducky, it was a good idea if the community got together like that. Could be an idea others could emulate! BTW I had noticed you r great time! As you say, "Bummer!" LOL

ibeeducky

Dang, one time I get on the top of the leaderboard with a really good time, and get kicked off. Bummers!
In my day and age, we had fun with carving jack-o-lanterns and good fun trick and treating. This day and age it seems it is a whole different story. Never know what nasty trick will be played.
Our building doesn't allow trick or treating.

skpy

Wow - we were quite balmy here in New Hampshire!

katwoody99

Skippy, that's hilarious!

This is a great puzzle, John - thanks!

We've had about 30 trick-or-treaters so far, which is about half the usual crowd! We're thinking the weather may have inspired lots of them to enjoy some of the indoor parties... it has gotten cold with wind and drizzle, and expected to drop below freezing tonight and tomorrow night! Quite brisk for Alabama this early in the season.

skpy

It makes me think of my High School days - every Halloween, at the end of the evening (after all the little kids had gone home) the High School Seniors would drive around and collect all the jack-o-lanterns that they could find and set them up on the school president's front lawn.... A traditional trick for our town. Probably all the parents were quite pleased not to have to deal with half rotting pumpkins after Halloween!

ibeeducky

You most likely are right parrotman. But what a delightful thing for them to do :)) !!

parrotman22

It is cool, Ducky. I would think that it is a community that has carved their pumpkins and come together for this. They may do it each year. Halloween is quiet in my little village!

ibeeducky

COOL!!!
Love the artwork. Someone went to a lot of work on this display :))

parrotman22

It's been quite a good day, thanks. I live in a small village and we don't, usually, get goblins!! LOL Enjoy your "visitors" and may they all be friendly!! :-))

skpy

Expecting lots of little gobblins to visit. It should be a great day! Hope your weather has improved.

parrotman22

Thanks, Skippy. I hope that it is good for you! :-))

skpy

Shame.... Delightful way to start the day however.

parrotman22

Shame I can't spell Halloween!! LOL
