This is a photo I took of an Acorn Woodpecker. These unique looking woodpecker is quite common down here in southern Oregon. We usually have several in our yard, year around. These birds are social and gather their acorns as a group. They use dead trees and telephone poles where they drill holes and stuff hundreds of acorns for their winter food storage. Several woodpeckers will use the same nest and raise the young communally. We had a communal nest on our property this year. We have been surprised how often they use our bird feeders. They our hanging feeders but they also get down on the ground with the doves and quail to eat the cracked corn we put out.

Terry, really appreciated the opportunity to camp there as it was close to Tombstone and Bisbee which are interesting. Getting all turned around near the border wasn't fun but these days GPS will keep that from happening again, I hope. Also, no more tent trailer and the travel trailer is to big to fit in any of the Cochise Stronghold slots. Steve

mojaveman: I could see the stronghold in the distance but didn't take the exit to go there. Wish I had now. Terry

A few years back we were touring the Southwest(Arizona and New Mexico). We just finished the LONG drive from Carlsbad Caverns and pulled into Cochise Stronghold Campground. Set the tent trailer up and zonked! Next morning we heard the biggest racket in the world. The oak forest we were in was full of the little noisy devils pictured above. Absolutely wonderful campground.

nuthatch43, that funny, I use the word because they some how remind me of clowns.

Do you notice the acorns in those holes this acorn woodpecker made. They can literally cover a tree trunk with holes adjacent to each other and fill them with acorns for winter use. I find this woodpecker somewhat of a clown. Love the red cap. Saw it once in a campground near Cochise stronghold. They actually came to the table at which I was sitting and sat on the table and bench. Guess campers bring food. They're willing to become friends.

I guess we don't have these birds here. I can't remember ever seeing one. I think I'd remember this beauty. They must be opportunistic feeders. Whatever is handy, they eat, whatever it is. I'd love to see them at work, hoarding acorns for winter. This is a good one, Terry. thanks, connie
