Why are you reporting this puzzle?

The Gloucester to Sharpness canal is on the right with the river Severn containing the ships graveyard on the left. In 1879 a railway bridge across the river was opened. Where the railway crossed the canal a swing bridge was built allowing tall ships to proceed along the canal. Toward the centre of the picture is a round tower which housed a steam engine providing power to open the swing bridge.

The railway bridge was badly damaged in 1960 by a tragic accident involving 2 tanker barges carrying oil and petrol - 5 of the eight crew lost their lives, and 2 of the 21 bridge spans collapsed. The bridge was never rebuilt and was later demolished.

Love it ..... And ten stars

Thank you Ank. I guess that by the time the bridge was lost in 1960, the mining industry was perhaps in decline and / or road links were good enough to meet transport needs.

A very beautiful photo. And I like the info. Now I only wonder. The bridge was gone, how did they do with the railway?

goingsilver

Thank you Kathleen, Suzy and warbler!

warbler

This is great. Now the steam engine was built aways from the river but I guess thats where the wood is to power the engine. This area could have looked alot different back in the day, too.

pumpkinhead

So green and pretty. One would never guess it was home to such tragedy.

Toto
