Reading from my brochure: Moffat Tunnel is 6.2 miles long, cutting the distance between Denver and the Pacific coast by 176 miles when it was opened in 1928. Prior to it's construction, the original Denver, Northwestern & Pacific railroad crossed Rollins Pass with a series of switchback loops and steep grades. Constant snow removal made it unprofitable.
