This moth has just emerged from her cocoon, after I raised her and many siblings from eggs laid on May 13. Isn't she beautiful? She has about a 4-inch wingspan.

Yes they are! The males differ mainly in the antennae - they're very full and feathery. They use them to detect pheromones from the female, which they can find from more than a mile away. As adults they have no mouthparts, and only live for a few days. So although they're actually common in this area (eastern US), they seem exotic because they're not often seen.
