Also called the zebra backed woodpecker.
Yesterday, I was trying to take pictures of all the birds in the front yard. Everytime I adjusted the telephoto lens, they could hear it. All the other birds would fly away immediately but the woodpeckers didn't and would pose for me.

A tripod !! That's great! I think one of these days we, your regular puzzle solvers, will be thanking Susan for giving you that neat gift!!

Thanks, Cathy. I have the sounds and flash turned off but they can still hear the zoom lens motor and the shutter click. The shutter sound works great for the woodpeckers because they 'pose' when they hear the click but all the other birds scatter.
It could be that they see me moving a little or the glint off my glasses.
I am not sure I want to get an expensive new camera just because of a few limitations when it does so many things so well and it fits in my pocket.
BTW, Mrs. Claus got me a tripod for Christmas but it is too difficult to take bird pictures. I told Susan I will use it outside when it warms up. I don't want to try to learn how to use it when my fingers are frozen! LOL!

Wonderful picture of a beautiful bird!! My camera has a "discreet" setting which turns off all sounds and flashes. If your camera has this setting it might help you to capture wildlife photos.

LOL!!

We have red-bellied woodpeckers, too. Lovely birds to watch. Also have the cute little downy woodpeckers.

Thanks, laurajane! LOL!

My, what big feet you have! Not you...the bird. I love these guys. Great shot, JC. He's looking right at you.

I'm sure, Jan. You can see a tiny bit of red on its stomach besides the red headed woodpecker's head is all red.
And it's easy getting these pictures. I just use chickiemama's technique of glue and lead shot! LOL!

JiggyBelle

Are you sure this isn't the "red-headed" woodpecker? lol!
WHAT A GREAT SHOT! I've said it before, I'll say it again.....you are the "Bird Whisperer!"
Thanks, JC!
