This is the wheel in the horizontal position, with a boat either side. There doesn't have to be a boat either side as they displace their own weight in water. The power needed to rotate the wheel is equal to the power needed to use an electric iron, which irons the creases out of clothes. A boat sails in, the wheel rotates and the boat sails out and continues in the same direction.

The wheel connects the Forth and Clyde Canal with the Union Canal - a drop of 35 metres.

Absolutely fascinating! 1:1 gearing means that as it rotates, the boat trays stay level; perfectly counterbalanced, almost no power is required. How old is this? I wonder why I never heard of it? I'd definitely have detoured to see it in action when I toured Scotland!
