This would've been a horrid place to end up in after the treacherous sea voyage from England. It gives me the shivers looking at it even now. There's a lot of history attached to these old ruins!
Thanks citycoed. People were sent here for as little as stealing a loaf of bread because they were starving! It's good that your gg/uncle survived and went on with his life.
Great puzzle. My gg/uncle was deported to Tasmania in 1849, for sedition. He was standing up for the rights of the working man in Manchester. I guess he could have gone here, but he ended up in Melbourne where he settled and had another family.
