jetmech7, yes you are correct. This map is upside down, they did draw a compass and it points down.
Why would they do this?

Jim this map is backwards Hamilton is west of Lake Ontario not east of it.

Fascinating! What a tiny place it was back then. Thanks for sharing :)

I can see where my Dads Service Station/Restaurant was on the beach strip, just above the canal/pier into Lake Ontario. Circa 1949

I too love the old maps, I find so many answers to why and how this land is the way it is today.
We have a park nearby that has a section of the original untouched shore line on Lake Ontario, it is such a treat to go and see what the first explores saw a few hundred years before.

I stood on my head and turned 180 degrees.... it made sense. :)
I do love old maps.
One of my favorite parts of teaching with a 7th grade social studies teacher, was when we had the kids pouring over ancient maps and making comparisons. Good stuff.

Yes PH, this is a bad map. It is upside down by our modern standards. You need to spin it around as we see this from the birds eye looking south.

I can't seem to get my bearings on the old map. I would think Lake Ontario would be to the east (or right) on the map, but I have been known to get lost now and then! :)

This is how things look only 42 years after the Treaty of Ghent, which saw the end to the war of 1812.
