The castle was passed into the Amboise family for 5 centuries. Pierre D'Amboise rebelled against Louis XI without success who in turn ordered the castle destroyed. I believe one of the sons Charles had it rebuilt later.

Robbie do you know why they dismantled it?

On serious note its amazing that it is still standing and looks like new.
