Building of the Summer Residence of the English consul, Carles Murray, began in around 1773, on lands that had once belonged to the Companhia de Jesus, which had been dissolved in 1760.
The estate, at that time known as "Quinta do Prazer", or "Plesasure Manor", was the Summer residence of the governors and bishops of Madeira until the late 18th century.
In the early 19th century, more precisely in 1817, the future empress of Brazil, the princess Leopoldina of Austria, stayed here while it was owned by the English merchant Robert Paje.
In 1891it was transformed into a hotel, and the building was reconstructed in 1915-1916, ln the romantic style, as the Grand Hotel Belmonte for the use of the Monte railway, and the building became one of the emblematic features of the local landscape.
With the dissolution of the Company, the building, while maintaining its romantic style and part of its gardens, was adapted to become an educational institution, at present known as the Infant D.Henrique College, which belongs to the Portuguese Provincie of the Priests of the Hearth of Jesus-Dehonians.
