Following the Earl's death the Countess has returned to the more frugal home of her father. She has taken a fatal dose of laudanum from a vial which now lies empty on the floor alongside the execution notice of her lover, Silvertongue. Her daughter wears calipers and bears the marks of having taken mercury, presumably as a cure for the disease passed on by her dissolute parents.

Je ne connais pas Hogarth mais ils a un talent certain pour peindre les sentiments.

I have loved this series of paintings and when I looked up Hogarth in Wikipedia, I saw a drawing (Gin Lane) which hung in my grandfathers house 50 years ago and which had made an impression on me.
