YES JitkaV THE SOIL IS CLAYISH. WASPS MAKE SMALLER CLAY NESTS UNDER EAVES, ON WALLS ETC. A FRIEND OF MINE HAS ONE ON A TYRE(TIRE) ON HIS TRAILER. THE NEST HAS A FUNNEL ON IT. I LOOKED IT UP ON GOOGLE, NO-ONE SEEMS TO REALLY KNOW WHAT THE REASON FOR THE FUNNEL IS.
Wow, looks like it's made out of clay or something. I've seen different kinds of forest ants, but never this one. Thanks.
THIS IS A MEDIUM SIZE HILL. ABOUT THE HEIGHT OF A MOTORCYCLE.JitkaV. QUITE COMMON IN HOT DRY AREAS AND TRIPLE THE SIZE. LIKE SKYCRAPERS FOR ANTS. JUST IN CASE IT FLOODS. THEY AREN'T USUALLY FOUND IN SUBURBIA lyndee BUT YOU NEVER KNOW, SUBURBIA IS SPREADING.
How big is this thing? Interesting puzzle, thanks.
That is quite an ant hill. I'm glad we dont' have these!
THIS HILL HAD A LOT OF WASPS FLYING IN AND OUT. THEY MAY HAVE BEEN ATTACKING OR HAVE TAKEN OVER AN OLD NEST.
