Datura stramonium, known by the common names Jimson weed or datura, is a plant in the Solanaceae (nightshade) family, which is believed to have originated in the Americas, but is now found around the world.[1] Other common names for D. stramonium include thornapple and moon flower,[2] and it has the Spanish name Toloache[3]

For centuries, datura has been used as a herbal medicine to relieve asthma symptoms and as an analgesic during surgery or bonesetting. It is also a powerful hallucinogen and deliriant, which is used spiritually for the intense visions it produces. However, the tropane alkaloids which are responsible for both the medicinal and hallucinogenic properties are fatally toxic in only slightly higher amounts than the medicinal dosage, and careless use often results in hospitalizations and deaths. Lovely flower, weed or not, and perfect for the poison section of the garden, with foxgloves and various other beauties.

Excellent photo, Sandy.

Such an interesting flower.

Toto

Ironic that this is the same family that produces potatoes, eggplants and green peppers.

I know it as Stramonium here in Australia, and I can see why it's also named thornapple, as it gets very thorny seed pods, and the grain farmers hate them, beautiful flower though, Thanks chickiemama.

lyndee

A very pretty weed.

chickiemama

Thank you Laura, Beekay, SunnyBarb and Lorna.

goingsilver

When I lived in Florida, I grew several different cultivars of datura. The beautiful, large flowers and so many different colors and even double and triple blooms made it desirable plant to grow :) Thank you chickie for that picture and a little write up :)

Beekay

That's even prettier than a morning glory. Too bad it's a weed with a bad reputation :-(

laurajane

Wow...how can a plant with "weed" in its name have such a pretty flower? Gorgeous little one, Chickie!

chickiemama

Ahhhhhh. it's lovely Sandy. Reminds me of Morning Glory.
Jimson weed. It just hit me, the Gene Autry song, "Back in the Saddle Again"
Where the lonsome cattle feed on the lowly jimson weed.

grandmalucy
