Why are you reporting this puzzle?

This is another color variation of the annual Vinca planted around Old Town Manassas, including the train station by the Farmers Market.

With heat, drought and poor soil tolerance, annual vinca (Catharanthus roseus), also known as Madagascar periwinkle, is a very popular annual.

Height/Spread
The plants grow 1 or 2 feet high and about the same in width. There are new spreading types that are wider and lower. Most vinca have a dense, rounded form.

Growth Rate
Vinca is grown as an annual. It will often return in following summers from self-sown seed. Annual vinca is not the same as the perennial periwinkles (Vinca minor or V. major) that are grown as groundcovers.

Ornamental Features
Vinca has durable, abundant flowers from June to frost. It is now available in a wonderful selection of new colors, larger flowers and even new growth habits. Both creeping and dwarf upright types are available.

How pretty it is. Love the colours. Is it an invasive plant or can one control it easily I wonder.

Thanks for the comment Robyn!!!

Science does amazing things indeed, Lunie, hopefully with good results for the future. Thanks.

They probably are fairly common Barb, since a City is using them. But that may not be right either. Some cities have progressive horticulturists working for them. Glad you liked it.

That may have been the other vinca-the ground cover type with the blue-ish little flowers, smllpkg. If it gets happy it can take over.

So pretty. I remember, some years ago, a friend went crazy trying to eliminate vinca from her gardens. So I guess you have to be careful where you put it.

I love the pastel pink and the red centers and if I ever see them, I will buy them :)
Thank you Dave, I appreciate your sharing the photo and the info :)

you just made me change my feelings to this plant...they are so common and grow just in the wild and i kind of hate them since i had a lot to uproot when cleaning up the garden...we only have the lavender and white then...
but with these lovely colors...(no doubt they are new varieties)...see how wonderful science is? thanks for sharing warbs...

robryan

I love those red centres Dave - and it's another great photo! Thanks!

THey are about 5 cm. or 2 in. Nicky. Nice to see you!

YOur welcome Cathy I wonder if they grow in your area. I imagine they would!

cevas

This is a wonderful picture!! Thanks Dave. And the flowers are lovely!!!!

niccolino59

These are truly amazing. How big are the blooms, warbler? They look fairly large.

warbler

This is one of the newer varieties Laura, the flowers are probably 2 inches across. All the new ones don't self seed much though as they are hybrids. Thanks.

I would think they grew down by where you are snooker. They like warm. Glad you liked them.

They are easy, Beekay, just a little general maintenance is all thats required.

I had that problem too t53de but the newest ones have gone back to easy it seems.

And Julian had a full time job, too, I've seen all your flowers. I'm so glad your improving in time for Spring!

That's a pretty one Warbs, I still have to go out and take some pics of mine. Not sure if many are flowering now. Everything has been a bit neglected since I hurt "the leg" although Julian has been doing his best for me. Thanks and hugs, janet

Beekay

I will certainly be looking for these at the nursery next spring. Lovely shade of pink with the bright dash of color in the center. Thanks for showing them to me.

They are too perfect to be real. :)

laurajane

I like their hot pink centers, Dave. Pretty little things!
