Why are you reporting this puzzle?

Built for a local banker, the C.F. Franke house was built toward the end of the Prairie School period and is one of the last of the Prairie School style houses built in Mason City.

Thie house originally followed he Prairie School style closely. It was centered on a large central fireplace and had broad overhanging eaves over the central section, solarium and first floor entry level foyer. The ribbon windows and rectangular ornamental molding contribute to the strong horizontal emphasis of the house.

The large roof overhang of the central section was removed in 1950, while the smaller overhang on the solarium and front entry was retained. Other than the missing central overhang, the appearance of the front of the house remains unchanged from when it was built. However, extensive additions and modifications have been made in the rear of the house.

That's one thing I like about the Prairie School homes, Cathy, the clean lines make them feel modern.

As I learn more about America.

I did some research into the overhand issue but couldn't find anything. It may have been related to the renovations going on at the back of the home. The landscaping and color add a lot to the home. I wondered though, if the horizontal trim work was a different color when the house was built.

I always wonder about change, maybe from being in the antique business for so many years, and I wonder when they changed the overhang, was it for style of a new period, deterioration of the original construction, or what. It looks nice like it is but you can definitely see the prairie style. Very cool!

Toto

Another house I was tempted to go peek in through the windows, suzy.

pumpkinhead

Looks like a very solid home. Thanks for the background of Prairie School style.

Lyndee, most of the true Prairie School roofs are concrete and are designed to handle the snow. Mason City is way up in Northern Iowa (about on same latitude as Milwaukee) and gets an average of 41 inches of snow a year.

Neat looking house. Wouldn't work very well in our area with the flat roof and the large snowfalls we get. It looks like a house that wouldn't have any wasted space.
