Willows love anyplace wet where they can get a foot (root) hold. This is an old tree by the size of its trunk and very well could have been growing there before the bank was reinforced with the rocks to stop erosion. We have a similar rock wall at our cottage on the north shore of Lake Erie in Canada. The perspective of this picture is fascinating.
