Maputo, the capital city, was built by the Portuguese some time during the long 470 year occupation. Now that it's back in Mozambican hands, it has deteriorated considerably. But, to be honest, it was well worth these people gaining their freedom from oppression. Mozambique went from the frying pan into the fire when they gave in into communism. They became free from that in around 1993 (not totally sure). There have been incredible changes and strides in their economics and even culture since then. I was there briefly duing the war in 1990 and then for years afterwards. It was like night and day.

Thanks pumpkin and chickie! I had several thousand photos from Africa and the majority were lost, due to one of the stupidest mistakes I have ever made on the computer. Argh. But I found some in another place, thankfully!
