Tucson, Arizona is home to the nation's largest cacti. The giant saguaro is the universal symbol of the American west. These majestic plants, found only in a small portion of the United States, are protected by Saguaro National Park, to the east and west of the modern city of Tucson. Here you have a chance to see these enormous cacti, silhouetted by the beauty of a magnificent desert sunset. The average life span of a saguaro cactus is 150 years, but some plants may live more than 200 years. A 20 foot tall saguaro weighs approximately 1 ton (2000 pounds).

Thank you smllpkg, yes, desert definitely has it's own set of flora and fauna :)

Fascinating landscape. So different from where I live.

SunnyBarb25

Thank you Floyd and Jo...I guess the growth rate also depends on the amount of rain they receive. Some years it rains more then others and so they grow faster or slower.

jacki2

that is seriously slow barb. maybe it will get a little growth spurt at some point and grow 3" in a year lol

Gladstone

That could be a post card.
We saw them a number of years ago visiting fellow Canadians
in a campground near Apache Junction.
I didn't realize that they grow so slow, but it figures in the desert.

SunnyBarb25

A great story you are telling me, Jill...Good that the balloon ride ended good without anyone getting hurt....Thank you :)

Lovely picture, Barb! Thanks :)

We visited Saguaro National Park a number of years ago. It is magnificent!

A sister-in-law lives in Phoenix, and on one visit, we went on a hot air balloon ride near there. The pilot turned out to be drunk and smashed into a huge cactus on the way down. Tragic, considering they grow so slowly. I am afraid of heights and spent the entire ride white-knuckled clutching onto one of the ropes with both hands. The bumpy landing didn't help.

My saguaro is in the ground for 4 years. I just went out to measure it and it is 8" now...I think it was about 5" tall 4 years ago. Looks like it is growing less than 1" a year. Not very much...LOL

pretty impressive plants barb. how long ago did you plant your little one, and how big was it when you planted it? thanks.

SunnyBarb25

Thank you Fran and Ardy. Those cacti definitely are fascinating by the sheer size they attain in their slow growth rate. I have one in my garden that is 15 years old and measures about 8". I grow it from seed. It was stunted for the first 11 years because it was in a pot. Only when I moved to Arizona, I planted it in ground and so now, maybe, it will feel good enough and start to grow a little faster.....at least I hope so... :)

I think these are so fascinating. Thanks for featuring them, Barb.
