Really interesting how this scene brings together so many different elements of life in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. The large crane is moving the huge spools of wires which are going to be sent to the off shore as part of the oil industry. In front is O'Brien's Puffin and Whale Tour Boat, one of the tours leaving Bay Bulls as part of the tourism industry. In the foreground, is the mermaid, part of the love of story telling going back to the early history of the province. Sir Richard Whitbourne, one of the more interesting characters in our history, who began coming to Newfoundland in 1579 recounts meeting a mermaid, in his book published in 1620. http://crossroadsforcultures.ca/index.php?var=transcriptions&var2=view&transid=15&selection=quotation&language=en
