Good puzzle.
I remember them well for keeping the needle in the groove and preventing skipping.

i have no idea

I remember the penny would keep the needle from jumping, sometimes two pennies or a nickel.

We used to use one of those small church keys to hold the needle in the groove....Maybe it was because we could get them for free.
