Thank you Dondi. The length of the bill also made me lean toward downy. I'll look forward to seeing yours.

I say it's a downy. The throat rather blends into the background, but in general the downy has less of a neck and a shorter bill; the hairy usually has a more defined head, appearing a little more oval, and a longer bill. The females (as this is) seem to be harder to tell in isolation, but tomorrow I'll post a picture of a female downy at my feeder which looks almost identical to this one.

Thank you Shirley!

I know nothing about these birds Patti, but from the comments I think you'll have to lift his tail.:))) Thanks Patti.

Thank you so much everyone, for all your great input and comments.

Sorry I didn't catch the feathers under the tail. Then we'd know for sure.

(LOL, Oddio!)

Either way, it's a nice photo Patti.

Wow, it looks like someone is being scolded, Warbler.

Is it a first year bird or an adult bird? How can you say size tells without knowing this. Are the feathers worn because it is getting ready to molt? What about that? There songs are a different pitch but is it juvenile or adult? It truly is hard to tell the difference for sure, except.... But the sure way is that the Downy has small black bars across the white feathers under the tail and the Hairy never does. Its amazing how many times you can see these, but not in this photo.

Both of these posts are just amazing to me.

I agree with Downy: the female has more speckled white on the wing than the Hairy, which has almost none. Sibley field guide is my reference.

I think it is a "she" since there is no red on the head. : )

Also, now I think that the beak is not as long, so it would be a downy.

goingsilver

Very cute whichever he is!

lyndee

They look a lot alike but the downey is 6 1/2 inches while the hairy is 9 inches. The hairy also has a longer beak. Hmmmm ???

roseheather

Hum, looks more like the hairy than the downy, but I'd need to see it in comparison to another bird to get a sense of the size.

It is also hard to tell in the light of this image. The Hairy from the Cornell site has a dark beak like the one in your picture.

Not able to see its size, but I would say this is a Downy due to the small bill and the more conspicuous tuft above it. Could you see dark bars along the white edges of its tail?
