I've ridden by this thing for a couple of years now and finally had a reason to stop and take a photo. This thing has a pull hitch and down between the wheels is what appears to be a blade like a grader blade. There is that seat up front and a platform in the back. Whoever stands on the platform in the back can turn the wheels which would adjust the blade. Just a guess.

well let me confuse you all .....First that little thing hanging down would be of no use to try and grade dirt or stone it is to flimsy..and a blsde put on there would just twist one way or the other,,,,now you let a man sit up front and drive the horse pulling it and that center arm down is pullin a small v blade like a cultivater blade and would cut a line while the man on the back drops corn seed in the rut you cut getting a big area done pretty quick in stead of walking to do it...LOL Oh well now I said my piece LOL

This is the horse and buggy version of the modern Maintainer used on the highway projects. Remember they had to grade the roads every spring due to the winter thaw which caused the great MUD problem.

fodus

My husband says it is an old time horsedrawn grader. We have a grader here that farmers can use.

All I can say is it looks like hard work!!

laurajane

Wow, this is a cool red thing!

I see. That comment wasn't there when I was writing mine!! I found a You Tube video showing a similar outfit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DjnBSATP3jQ

Thanks Jack.

Neat picture. I agree with chickiemama -- there doesn't look like much of a blade here....

I think your right about the conversion, Trapper

Blonde eyesight-1 everyone else-1/2
Actually there were two heavy oak boards down there with holes in them and I assumed something was mounted to those back boards. But its a mystery to me, Chickie. I'm just one of those darn online puzzle solving nut cases, out sneaking photos.

jacquescamus

that's an oldie warbler! beautiful!

(Walter said "That's what she said." Not sure what he meant... )

Thanks angelbender and you to oddio.

I like your approach, lyndee, and thank you.

chickiemama

Ok, blonde question. If this is a grader, am I to assume the actual grader blade is missing? LOL That measly little thing hanging down wouldn't do much.

This is an early horse drawn road grader. Usually pulled by 2 to 4 horses. Later converted to be pulled by a tractor.

lyndee

It's definitely something to make work easier for somebody and..... a great jigidi puzzle!

oddio

I tend to agree with your assessment of it! I've seen an old horse-drawn grader, but it was of a newer design than this, in fact, more like what we have today without an engine.

Hmmmm. Verrrrrry interrrresssting, warbler!
Early grader or snow plow? You sure do share a lot of interesting things. I'll pass this to my son in the excavating business and see what he thinks about it.
