Why are you reporting this puzzle?

"The New York Public Library has an incredible digital collection of antique materials and prints, featuring artifacts like photographs, manuscripts, and maps. . . . One of its most amazing archives — a list of ingenious life hacks that have survived from the 1900s, once supplied in cigarette packs!"

There are sixteen of them, and I'll give you all sixteen, four at a time.

#9 - “In order to detect dampness in a strange bed and so be warned of the danger, a small hand mirror should be slipped between the sheets and left for a few minutes.

“Any mistiness or blurred appearance of the mirror’s surface when withdrawn is an indication of dampness, and the bed should not be slept in.”

Amen Bill. That would be too much to bear - cold and clammy!

Bill_I_Am

As I hinted, good thing it doesn't get cold there. :-)

:-)

Like using a mesh umbrella in a monsoon!

Or in a tree house in Hana, Maui as Andy suggested, Bill. And that's too long (and now, amusing) a story for my four fingers to convey here. Talk about a leak in the roof! How about "walls" as well?

patw

Most welcome, Leanne. :-)

patlander

Pat, I guffawed at your house guests reference. Thanks, I needed that.

Bill_I_Am

I can see this happening in a cheap guest house someplace like India, where maybe they ran short of sheets and the day's laundry didn't get dry completely (outside). But like Pat, I don't see what the danger is--just a bit of discomfort, perhaps. Now if it were somewhere in Russia, the discomfort could be substantial.

dris651

Could be of use if you happened to spend a night or two say, in a treehouse in Hana maybe, hmm?. Just guessing of course...

patw

I'm guessing so, Plum. Hmmmm, so that's what my house guests are going to do when they walk into my house with a suitcase in one hand and a mirror in the other. And here I was thinkin' they were exceedingly vain.

Plumpossum

I presume this is aimed at people who are sleeping away from home? (At least, I hope so!)

patw

Lol, bhelen.

patw

Cindycain, does "be warned of the danger" strike you as a bit over the top when it comes to a damp bed? I found that odd.

patw

:-) Leanne.

Hi, Clairity. If you go to my User page, you'll see the previous nine I posted. Tomorrow will be the final four of the sixteen. I'm so pleased you are enjoying them, and thank you for saying so!

bhelen

Interesting info! TFS ~ I'd sterilize that small hand mirror, after it's use! LOL

cindycain

Good to know...

patlander

Yuck!

Clairity

Looking forward to the collection. Thank you.
