Most evident in early spring and later again in the fall, these guys dot the edges of the Hudson Helderberg Rail Trail in Delmar, NY. They all seem to have this star-like form and look like a kind of lamb's ear. Very soft leaves! Anyone?

It's got to be, Bill! Thanks! I hadn't noticed the velvety flower spikes, but I'll keep an eye out next summer. As to finding it in NY: "In the United States it was imported very early in the 18th century and cultivated for its medicinal and piscicide property... It is now found commonly in all the states." If only I hadn't slept through all those Botany lectures!

Could it be mullein?
