I worked with learning disabled students for 33 years....you always give them something they can relate to. The umbrella was something to relate to!
Thank you for not laughing! You can tell I'm not really good with technical language...
thanks for defining, PD! The umbrella was a great example.
You're right, they are also used in concrete.
In Australia, we call them, Wall Plugs, Green Plugs, Spaghetti ( if you buy a length and cut it to size).
If you want to hang a painting or a shelf on drywall, and you can't find a stud to screw into (that's the best, most secure way to do it--screwing into the wood behind the surface), then you use a molly, which you put into the drilled hole before you use the screw. Think of a porthole on a ship--if you put an umbrella through it, then open the umbrella, you won't be able to pull the umbrella back out. The molly expands the same way, so the screw stays in the wall.
What the hell are Mollies?
Have to agree with Hibrand and change my guess to stir sticks!
Tradesmen screw screws into them.
Sorry, The first 6 guesses aren't even close.
I'll give you a clue.
