I will NOT pig out on figs this year. I will unload them on my new neighbor. Heh heh. . .

I think that's why they are so expensive here--if you can find them at all.

While brushing my teeth I just remembered that I passed through Riverside about 38 years ago. Some friends and I were living in Scottsdale and decided to go to Disneyland. One of them had a friend living in Riverside, a professor by the name of Fran Whalen, if memory serves (which it rarely does these days). Her house was our base for the Disneyland visit. I don't remember much about Riverside except a very charming Mission district. It was January, and so rather cool there.

Plumpossum

Too bad they are so fragile and perishable. Trader Joe had some fresh ones on sale a while ago, so I tried them. They were tasteless and insipid.

Bill_I_Am

Thanks for the kind offer, Plum, but I am not a jam eater. I only like figs au naturel.

Plumpossum

Hop over the hills to Riverside next July, Bill etc, and you can pig out on figs. If you like fig jam, I still have lots left over from last year; I'd be glad to send you some.

Bill_I_Am

Fresh figs are my FAVORITE fruit. As you can imagine, they are scarce as hen's teeth in Colorado. I got hooked on them when I was working in Saudi Arabia, where they were imported from Syria.

Plumpossum

Hi, heathercru -- thanks for commenting.

My main problem with fig pests has been birds that sample many of them (making them worthless). In past years the main problem was rodents (mostly ground squirrels), which I seem to have gotten under control for the time being. Insects have not been a major problem -- yet! a few days ago I found a couple of figs literally buried in peach beetles, so maybe insects will be a bigger problem henceforth. A major problem is that the ripe figs really should be picked, or they will attract all kinds of problems. Keeping them picked is a major chore for me!

I don't know where you live, but here in southern California we had an unusually warm winter; we sort of went from fall directly into spring, skipping winter and the important winter rains. So now we have a raging drought! The figs don't seem to care what the weather does, as long as they get enough water. My fig tree is on a drip watering system, so it does pretty well.

heathercru

I have NEVER gotten "up to here" with figs. I could eat them until I turn purple, then give the rest away to friends and neighbors and go back and do it the next day.
Just curious, did you see an unusually large amount of bees, wasps, butterflies, etc. on your figs last year? My tree was covered with them, so much so I could barely get any figs for myself, and then we had one of our worst winters on record -- just wondering if there is a connection?

Plumpossum

:o)

Marian_Black

Well, at least we have something in common - not possums, only squirrels LOL. Will probably catch up with you again through the puzzles posted. Have a great day.

Plumpossum

No, sorry, but I would surely like to see some Australian possums. Here in North America we have only one species of opossum, and I am very fond of them.

I live in southern California; I have a friend who lives near Calgary.

Marian_Black

With a tag as Plumpossum, would you by chance be in Australia. I'm originally from Adelaide, but now live in Calgary, Alberta in Canada.

Plumpossum

:o)

I like figs, too, Marian, but too much of a good thing can get pretty tiresome!

Marian_Black

I love figs...actually had some today as a matter of fact.

Plumpossum

Even so, omom.

octomom

Holes in the head are good sometimes ~ they let the extraneous stuff out.

Plumpossum

Tsk, Warbler. If you don't behave yourself, you're likely to find a bag of figs on YOUR doorstep.

Heaven forbid that they should be sprouting -- I need another fig tree like I need another hole in the head.

warbler

I keep checking back too, dang are they starting to sprout? I fig-ure you'll show us your neighbors door with some bags of figs in front of it soon. Or is that a fig-ment of my imagination.

octomom

It was the best I could come up with on the spur of the moment. Sigh, so underappreciated am I............................

Plumpossum

Tsk. . .

octomom

I take it you're figged out. Or, as one from NYC might say ~ figeddaboudit. Hee hee.

Plumpossum

Omom, I don't really care what the neighbor does with the figs -- the only alternative to giving them away is to deposit them on the compost heap. I still have many jars of canned figs and fig jam from last summer that will take me years to use up. If I leave the figs on the tree, they will attract ants, birds, and rodents, so they really need to be kept picked. I'm a bit "up-to-here" with figs.

octomom

Hi jlou, I've done that so often I can't count them any more ~ typing a comment and forgetting to hit "Post comment", then backing out of the puzzle only to realize, OH NO, I forgot to hit Post.

Plumpy, I hope your neighbor actually enjoys them and doesn't treat them as the proverbial Christmas fruit cakes...

Plumpossum

Your comments are appreciated, Omom, Warb, florrie, RoseH, and Jlou.
And yes, Warb, so far I've dumped two bags of figs on the new neighbor, who professes to "love them". More on the way. See, Warb, you should have added Riverside to your recent itinerary. . . . tsk. . .

Thanks, Jlou, for adding to the "old abandoned house" conversation.

warbler

10 days later...so are you actually sharing with your new neighbor, yet. :) Everytime I check in and see these babies, my mouth waters...

jlou

Octomom, I thought I had left you a message, I don't know where it went
but this is what I remember of it.
You have never eaten Fig Newton cookies?
I used to make stuffed figs, fill them full of chopped pecans and roll them
in confectioners sugar. Yummy! and fattening. jlou

jlou

Hi! Plumpossum, perhaps one day you will see this message, I left
one for you on the "Old Abandoned house in Ireland" jlou

warbler

Thanks Florrie.

roseheather

Plumpossum, you asked if my NC family gets inundated with figs.

I don't think so, and it is similar in growing conditions as Warbler, I think, and he said "they're more like big shrubs." I've only ever seen theirs in November, December, or very early January, so I'd guess theirs is more like a shrub also, but with treats! : )

warbler

I can't think of anything resembling a fig in taste, sorry.

octomom

Well then, I'll just have to use my imagination.

Plumpossum

Thanks for commenting, Francamia and dize5!
Omom, nothing that tastes even remotely like a fig (except another fig. . .) has ever come to my attention. Maybe Warbler knows knows of something?
Warbler, you can be replaced, you know. . . . tsk. . .

warbler

Awesome! Jefferson grew them here in Charlottesville Va. Actually I see them around here and there but they're more like big shrubs. The figs are good tho. You just as well start now Plum.

dize5

A great puzzle

octomom

I've never actually eaten a fig. Anything to compare them to?

Francamia

My favourite thank you........

Plumpossum

Help y'self, LJ. My fig tree is an over-achiever!
RH, does your NC family get inundated with figs?

roseheather

They look good!

My NC family have them on their property too.

laurajane

Oh, if you need to give some away, Possum, I know who would take a few off your hands...ahem... :o)))
