One of the gardens at the Biltmore Estate in North Carolina

Biltmore Estate is a large private estate and tourist attraction in Asheville, North Carolina. Biltmore House, the main house on the estate, is a Châteauesque-styled mansion built by George Washington Vanderbilt II between 1889 and 1895 and is the largest privately owned house in the United States, at 178,926 square feet (16,622.8 m2)[2] and featuring 250 rooms. Still owned by one of Vanderbilt's descendants, it stands today as one of the most prominent remaining examples of the Gilded Age, and of significant gardens in the jardin à la française and English Landscape garden styles in the United States. In 2007, it was ranked eighth in America's Favorite Architecture by the American Institute of Architects.

That's not so big - that's only a little over 4 acres of living space. :-) What do you do with 250 rooms??? I can only come up with a dozen or so functions...

I think you should do a whole series on the Biltmore Estate Warbler. That would be awesome! There is so much to see in each season I don't think you would run out of subject matter for a long time :-)))

Thanks Patti!

Robbie , we had a friend who worked in the gardens and we got to go in the house with her and go through the secret passages. It was amazing inside! And the gardens!

I agree, smllpke! But it was Spring when I was there last and the azaleas were in peak bloom, which was a treat!

It's a wonderful place to visit, though I'd recommend doing the house one day and the gardens another. Then there's the farm to see and a very nice (and tasty!) winery, too. We were there in the summer and didn't see this display, but I'm sure it's beautiful in all seasons. I'd love to go back someday for their Christmas illuminations and the house all done up.

Well worth the few visits I did mate, the kitchen blew me away, it was very modern for it's time. Thanks for the great photo!
