Thanks, nievine!

I think Catlin's style is ethnographic----that is, he always seems interested in recording details of costume, face decoration, and other cultural elements, and with a sense of urgency. I can't find any data about his art training; might have been mostly informal.

I agree with you about dolls, Phyllis, for sure. I'm not dissing them; I'm dissing the lack of realism of Catlin's painting when it comes to portraying the human figure.

Umm! I find Indian art quite interesting. That dolls are used to show the costume of the day is no different to today [I have dolls in Welsh and Irish dress!] She's quite pretty in a rough sort of way and must represent some well born Indian woman. I cannot imagine everyone would own such a lovely cape, but am prepared to be corrected on that:-)

She looks like a handmade doll. Not much "real" about her, except maybe that stick we can't see. :-)

Tsk.

Wikiart lists several of his paintings as Realism. I think it's realism with broomsticks stuck up some rear ends.

What is Catlin's style again, Gayle? His last two works seem very stiff/basic, Nice color though.
