Why are you reporting this puzzle?

Not to everyone's liking no doubt but I am always fascinated to see insects close up. This one is 2x life size and a focus stack of 27 images.

I forgot to mention that using this technique on a live insect only works if it stays still. It also demands a lot of patience, many times it has gone wrong because of subject movement or because I did not focus on the entire subject throughout.

Bjresh

It was gone.. Thanks for sharing this technology it is just amazing.

Bjresh

It does and it's more magic than computers that it's possible or that one has the patience. I thought it was all about knowing what to shoot, how to focus and click. I could never get pass the knowing what to shoot and. Y the time I got focused - if it was a bird

At high magnification, this being 2 times life size, it is not possible to get the whole subject in focus in one image. I started by focussing on the tip of its wing and took one shot. Then (camera and macro lens being on a focus rail to move backwards and forwards) I moved it forward less than 1mm and took another shot. This carries on until I have reached the furthest wing tip, which took 27 shots.

On the computer, I process all the images and use special software that chooses the sharpest part of each image and 'stacks' them all together to give the image above. Hope that clarifies it a bit and thanks for commenting.

Bjresh

My fingers didn't like touching it but worth it. What is a "focus stack" of images? If we could see this clearly would he look any different?

Thanks for the comments.

Everything is here for a reason and insects are really under appreciated for all that they do, whether it is pollination or clearing up dead matter.

Love it!

I generally skip over insect puzzles, but this one is so spectacular, I couldn't pass it up!
