I had a copper tub for boiling the washing and a wooden-roller mangle, a great cast-iron stand thing. Everything bleached, blued, starched and on the line by 8 am. I must have been crazy.
We had one when I was 10 years old. I remember one time one of my brothers caught his hand in one. Thankfully it was old and the ringers weren't very strong, almost useless actually. He was fine.
Good old days, when laundry day was a laundry day
oh yes i remembe this..i was about 6 or 7 and wanted to help mamma so i started wring out some clothes for her while she was out at the clothes line and ended up getting my arm caught in the rollers....never ever touched or went near that again ...lesson learned the hard way
Yes, I remember them. When I was about 6 or 7, my mother was hanging the clothes on the clothesline. I thought I would "fool around" with the wringers and low and behold, it grabbed my hand. We lived just 2 blocks from the hospital so Mom walked me to the ER where our Dr was waiting. I still have the scar and boy, what a memory it left.
My mom got her hair caught in the wringer as a child, and she had a bald spot on the back of her head for the rest of her life.
Ah, yes, Along with the caution/warning not to put fingers in the wringer. ; )
