The Cathedral of Saint Mary the Crowned is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Gibraltar. It is the primary centre of Catholic worship in the Diocese of Gibraltar.
The Cathedral of St. Mary the Crowned, known to most residents simply as the ?Cathedral?, is situated in the centre of town.

This Roman Catholic Cathedral is very frequently visited by tourists. The site was originally used as a mosque during the reign of the Moors up until Gibraltar was captured by the Christians in 1462. The Catholic Kings, Ferdinand and Isabella, decreed it to be stripped of its Islamic past, and extended the size of the Church. Their coat-of-arms was placed in the courtyard, where it can still be seen today. The Church at that time extended to the opposite side of what is now Main Street.

Thanks Denise.. During Christmas festivities there are a lot of functions going on just outside the Cathedral. Like carol singing, cake stalls and other stalls are set up in aid of charity.
