The original 176 =-acre park consisted primarily of a long, narrow canyon with a small stream flowing through it. At that time these formations were called "dells" a name that has stayed with the park. After Matthiessen's death, the park was donated to the state of Illinois, which opened it as a public park. In 1943, the state remained the park in honor of Matthiessen. Since then, the park has grown to 1,938 acres and includes much of the significant natural areas along the main dell, some former prairie land, and some forest land south of the origninal park

Brie1648

The greens will be so fresh and lush - the colours totally different

I want to go back in the Spring Brie. I think it will look completely different then.

How wonderful that people had the wisdom to see the future and preserve something so simply wonderful.
Those bluffs are a little steep for me so I will follow the trail and the park is 200 miles further north than where I shall be for Thanksgiving...a pity

lyndee

LOL Chookies and thank you.
Hope so Chickie. Sounds like it will be now but there's still the weather that needs to cooperate! Cold is ok but I don't really like wet too much! LOL

Thanks Loveydear....I was happy with what I saw other than not getting to see the waterfall.
Thanks Morris.
Yes Toto, I think I would like to revisit in the Spring. I think it will have a completely different look to it. Also there is suppose to be a lot of birds there in the spring.
