Perhaps the space is in an attempt to stop pests like bugs and snakes entering the house?

Rebb2 - that would have been a great design idea! Unfortunately, having walked by it, it wouldn't even "fit" a Cooper Mini. They should have listened to you! :))

In regards to Ringleader's question about the open space below the house. I can't be sure, but a close enlarged look at it, it appears that there is a strong possibility that there is a space below the house for parking a car or something. That's my observation.

Ardy, I thought maybe it would be wave surge. But, it is not THAT close to the ocean and there is a huge bluff in front of it. It does have a great deck, though. Thanks.
