airighdrishaig - I came to New Zealand on the Captain Cook, also of the Donaldson Line, in 1955.
Converted as an immigrant ship, certainly not a luxury liner, but the old girl got us here. Took about five weeks through Panama. Now it's about two days by air!

I'm glad that he survived, Moray. Thanks for those interesting anecdotes. Keep well! :-))

parrotman22

I hope that your uncle survived!! I worked with shipwrecks a lot. My job was on salvage and towing worldwide. It was really interesting work. I've got another site on Jigidi called Tugman22. I just post larger versions of the ones posted here. BTW I'm John.

parrotman22

Good use of site/sight! LOL. I've posted the Danica as a jig sometime in the past! I'm sure that someone said that it was near to them when I posted it. Could be a neighbour!! LOL I lived in Tobermory for a few years!

It took me a while before I understood your comment, airighdrishaig (sounds Scottish), but very clever!! An amazing place. No Health and Safety there!! LOL

parrotman22

And a shot or two to celebrate afterwards (and settle the nerves...)

parrotman22

Ooooooh, yeeeeeeeesssssss! We limped into Dover very bow down. We were in a force 10 and the hull plates opened a bit. All's well that ends well!!

brightspark

skpy

Yes, I think so!

parrotman22

parrotman22

I bet. I remember my father talking of sailing into a harbor near Washington, DC. The tiller had broken, there were high seas and night had fallen. All of a sudden they could see a tanker bearing down on them and they figured they were goners (assumed they were not viasable to the larger ship.) It did veer off when it was nearly on top of them and the coast guard did find them and tow them in, but it was a pretty hairy trip!

parrotman22

I've been on a sinking tug in the English Channel, on the way to Rotterdam. Not the nicest feeling, Skippy!!

skpy

I can only imagine the sinking feeling the captains feel when this sort of thing happens. (No pun intended.)
