You are so right about it taking a disaster before man takes action! It is true of so much of our history. ; )

Yes Roseheather, New York (New Amsterdam) was founded by us :))
We do have pretty big floodgates in Zeeland, I think that might work for New York as well (and New Orleans). But we also built the "Deltawerken" , as it`s called, AFTER the big flood in the fifties. It seems that first something disastrous needs to happen before man takes action!!!

Thank you for your comment, Annjax. Some are saying now that the harbor is too big for a structure, but we have done some pretty remarkable things in the past. I would think something similar, a structure to stop surge, could work for New Orleans also.

I've never been to NYC but I'm surprised they do not already have some kind of system in place. I would think that being surrounded by water(and the ocean)this would be a given................

When I heard some discussion on the news yesterday about creating structures similar to those that protect the Netherlands I was reminded that New York was first known as New Amsterdam. The conversation was that with the flooding from the 13 foot surge, from Hurricane Sandy, which flooded the subway system in NYC there may be a need for man-made dikes and floodgates, similar to those that protect the Netherlands today.
