Why are you reporting this puzzle?

The grackles are being pestiferous around the feeders, bullies that they are. This is an immature Common Grackle, brown rather than black and iridescent, except for a few feathers on the wing.

One intriguing element is that the eye in immature grackles is supposed to be brown; at some point they lighten and ultimately become the yellow of the mature adult ("brown until October", says one source). This bird, like the Brown Thrasher, simply has a white iris at this point; I'm guessing that eye color, and its evolution to adult color, is more variable than people thought.

Wow - what beautiful feathers. Thanks, dondi.

Beautiful photo. Looks like the iridescent feathers are coming in on the wings.
Thanks for that info on the eyes. That explains one of the grackles I tried to photograph earlier this year. The feeder was in deep shade and none of the birds were showing the iridescence. but this one bird's eye was so light I wondered if something was wrong with the camera.
