Why are you reporting this puzzle?

I was photographing the sparrows and finches this evening, when this classy fellow flew in and started helping himself to the sunflower seeds.

Oh!!! Lucky you!!!!!

Thanks for the info. Interesting! Every few years, one will come to our feeder and I'm too excited to get a photo. He stays a few minutes, eats a few seeds, then takes off for northern climes. They don't nest here, and I never see more than one. Lucky you!

dondi

They'll stay around; they nest here. This one went right to the sunflower seed feeder, and wasn't particularly spooked, so maybe he's a returnee.

Surprisingly, we're near the northern limit of their summer range in the east; they only go a bit north of the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence River, although they nest considerably farther north in the west, in the Rockies. Perhaps it's because they nest in deciduous trees and prefer edge vegetation; it's not too far north of here that the forests become large tracts of substantially evergreen species.

Fab photo! Will he stay around, or does he summer farther north?

Beautiful photo, gorgeous bird

That's an excellent shot dondi. I had one on my feeder a couple years ago. First time I had ever seen one and I was pretty excited.
