Yubari train station
Lonely train train in lonely Yubari, Hokkaido, Japan. Only serves one train line, and it ends here. Once a thriving coal mining town of over 100,000 people, Yubari has dwindled to a population of about 10-13,000 since the mines were closed (the central government in Japan decided it was cheaper to buy coal from China and Australia). The town barely survives from the tourists skiing in the winter. My friend on the right is 45, and one of the youngest people in town.
