That´s what I was also told in 1957."Use the right (correct) hand."

It's funny to see but it has been extremely difficult for some - thanks Barbara! :-)))

I don't remember what grad I was in and don't remember what the boy did

I always had close to the front so I could se the black board
our teacher turned a boy across my desk and beat his rear-end
when I was in the first grade the teacher paddled me in my hand with a ruler I don't remember why

I went to Catholic school in third grade and remember the nuns hit us for any infraction very strict. I left and went to public school for the rest of my schooling. We had ink well and I was left handed but I wrote normal as I was told and left alone. There were others in class that wrote upside down and as they wrote they would smear the ink as they crossed the page. Those kids they tried to make write right handed. School was very different than today I am not sure if it is better or worse seeing how kids lack discipline today

Oh but the pride I felt when chosen to be the ink monitor and we didn't have paper towels!

Ink wells don't remind me, so messy.

I love these old photos. Interesting. Thanks.
~I can remember a boy in grade 1 being punished by the teacher using a wooden ruler on his palm. The welts were still there hours later. (He had dunked a girl's pigtail in his ink bottle.)

I was smacked on two occasions, once for talking in class and once for throwing a hat in the air because it came down outside the fence.

Interesting that boys and girls were sitting together. In 1961 and I don't remember for how long after that we were allowed to spank a child with an adult witness present. I never did spank one but was a witness once for another teacher. Even when I started school in 1941 there was no restriction over using the left hand for writing. Thanks, Barbara. These are fun.

Yes my village I started in 1961 children could use their left hands by then but it was still very strict, no talking in class and boys were still caned.

Have always loved old photos. They used to be 100 years old, now they were taken 2 more generations ago. Oh dear. Tempus fugit,

It's lovely seeing a couple more 'old' photos. Are they of your village, Barbara? :-)
