Pat, isn't it wonderful to be owned by such intelligent animals?? They have us trained so well! I love the sound of your Maggie, Dog With Attitude!! LOL
My Maggie is the same way! We don't play fetch, we play catch. I go out with a bucket of at least a dozen tennis balls (only tennis balls--if there's no felt cover, she won't even touch them--and preferably squeaky ones, not real ones--she likes to squeak them after she catches them and if they don't squeak, she spits them out with disdain...). I stand about 20 feet away, and toss or bounce one to her, and she catches It. If it gets away from her, she certainly doesn't bother to chase it, and if my bounce ricochets the wrong way, she just watches the ball go by... Then I repeat the process until all are used, and then we do the "change sides" race and she runs to where I was standing, and I go to where all the balls are now on the ground, and we start again! Cassie, on the other hand, does love to fetch, but I always say Maggie and I are having infield practice, and that soon she'll be ready for the major leagues...!
