Up in the Lake District today, just as we left the summit I looked up to see these two hikers who had just finished taking a summit photo, so I took the shot..

Wow. Thanks for the interesting information. 214 peaks! It's great that his work is kept in print.

BrightSky69..

Ps. cairns are also found alongside the paths on the ascent of the mountains, they act as markers for when the paths are covered in snow :-)

BrightSky69..
he had red on his coat to match, plus red on his backpack.. guess he likes to be seen :-)

Most summits have cairns ( pile of stones ) on them.. a lot of people like to add another stone when they achieve the summit.. In the Lake District a lot of hikers I come across are Wainwright Baggers, or Peak Baggers.. Wainwright loved the Lake District and made it his life time work ( spare time ) to map out the walks and peaks in the Lake District... he hand wrote, hand illustrated the walks he published in several books braking up the Lake District into areas.. So now hikers love to try and complete all of Wainwrights 214 peaks.. his books are much loved, and the originals have now been copied in the same delightful format for more people to enjoy :-)

"Red gaiters" is smiling - I like that. (I had to look up "gaiters.") Looks like hikers pile the stones?
