__________________________________________________

'Lame duck' was originally an 18th century term for investors in the stock market who could not, or would not, pay their brokers. Later in 1926 a Wisconsin newspaper, wrote the heading: 'Making a lame duck of Coolidge'. Calvin Coolidge would be the first of many American presidents to be saddled with the epithet - Lame duck president.

Here is an unusual word to throw into your conversation - anatine, it means duck-like.

I've included unusual duck images among the lame duck images... they couldn't all be lame ducks!!! I wonder if anyone can spot the image that really doesn't fit in!!!

If you want to know what I am celebrating tomorrow feel free to return to this page after 10 pm (GMT - UK) when I will post a link to preview tomorrow's celebration puzzle.

Love this one....

LOL well done Katie - you spotted the "red herring" - but it's not a platypus!!

It's a courgette (also called zucchini)!!! LOL :~)))

buckeye425

I think the "red herring" is the middle left picture. Looks a bit like a platypus.

monza006

Thanks Lil - no-one has mentioned the "red herring" - I'll have to let everyone into the secret soon!!

Thanks Ardy, I love your appreciation!!

Thanks Barb - it's good to keep learning!!

LOL - poor you Katie - I hope you are keeping safe on the ice - and not slipping quite so badly as that poor duck!!

Thank Jo - it isn't the dog photo - but I included that because the chicks have bonded with that dog... which I figured was really unusual!!

Thanks Heidi - you clearly know lots about ducks!! I didn't know that about the Muscovy. It's lovely to know you so enjoy these puzzles :~)))

LOLOLOLOLOL - Thank you so much for that link Hanne - I've watched it and giggled away like a kid!!! It's so fun :~)))

Elfie

Oh yes, that poor duck on the ice!! But Mandy I think you should see another bird that has troubles even if it's rare to see it:

Thanks so very much!!

Surreal_Heidi

That poor Muscovy with the Fulvous Tree Duck on it's back. Any other duck, and it wouldn't be a problem. The Muscovy is the only duck without waterproof feathers and down.

Really, though, all of the pictures are great fun! Thank you SO much for these daily ''Who Knew???'' puzzles.

A fun puzzle Mandy!! Thanks for the info too! :)
Is it the dog photo? They look like baby chicks to me!

buckeye425

I feel so bad for the duck slipping and sliding on the ice - I know just how it feels. Thanks for the great images and info Mandy! :>)

tigress

I also didn't know the origin of this term. Learn something new everyday. Cute images. Thanks, Mandy. :-))

ringleader

Mandy, your illustrations here are so cute. I didn't know about the origin of the term, lame duck. I've heard it used, especially in referring to a president or to Congress. Thanks for continuing this series. I know it takes a lot of your time. Hugs.

LilBitOPretty

I think I know, but I won't tell. Thank you.
