The drive in the wooded area has a culvert, at this point, for a small creek which is often dry but a rain of more than 1/10 of an inch will bring water to this stream.
Really love these photo`s Roseheather. I love the woods. Only 3 weeks a year I get the chance to take long walks in the woods. Seeing these photo`s made me envy you. Whish I could go there!!
Actually, commonest ferns in the country (I think). I meant that they grow wherever the water gathers even if the gullies are dry most of the year. Raking in those woods (our drive was 1/4 mile from the road to the house) takes a lot of time and effort, so I did appreciate seeing it.
My NC family will appreciate that you noticed that they have swept the leaves off the drive. I think it is something they are expected to do by the people they rent from. And yes, I did notice the fern when I took the picture. Although, I would not have been able to understand that it is a specific fern to the area.
If you look for the patches of Ebony Spleenwort and Christmas Fern (the two most common ferns in the Piedmont forests), you know where the water runs when it rains - thats the darker green patch in the center of the photo. This photo is just exactly like our driveway in Pittsboro, except maybe ours was never quite so clean-swept of leaves. Thanks, RH!
Jacque, this is North Carolina and they get very little annual rainfall. There would be water in it only if they get a significant amount of rain, like over 1/2 inch or so.
Walking isn't something I do very often, but the temp was just cold enough so I didn't get too tired. If it is too warm it makes it hard for me to breathe.
