Thanks so much for the links rose! That is for sure what I am looking at! The dist map shows them in the NE corner of CT where I am!! Thanks for your input.
The wiki link showed that particular insect in continents other than the Americas. This link: http://www.massaudubon.org/Nature_Connection/wildlife/index.php?subject=Insects&id=5 details the hummingbird moth in this part of the world. And this site: http://www.fs.fed.us/wildflowers/pollinators/pollinator-of-the-month/hummingbird_moth.shtml from the US Forest Service shows their distribution across the US.
A MOTH?? I cannot believe it!! Thank you maw, two, suzy & mindy for all stopping by & taking the time to comment. I learn SO much here!!
Yes, 0829 it is a butterfly bush, the pale purple. I prefer the dark purple blossoms myself, but butterflys, bees, these things..... seem to prefer these.
I have had them in my garden in NC for years. They fly by so fast, I thought at first they were hummers, too. Then discovered they are hummingbird moths.
For over 20 years, when working in garden, these have flown by & around me. Have always thought they were ugly hummers, until I took pics this year! Sounds & flies like one, but YIKES ~ It's not even a bird!! Is it??
