This old tin belonged my mother. I don't know if chocolates originally packed inside it...or what...On the bottom of the tin it is simply stamped..".Made in England.:

Biscuits or Toffees...hmmm.if only those hinges could talk...

Yes, iri88, you might be right about the biscuits. Tins of Shortbread were generally emblazoned with Scottish scenes, and tartan colours, but I am uncertain how English biscuit tins were decorated.

It could be a biscuit tin, also agree with ulangariver that chocolates were not an English speciality.

That's what my mom had in it...buttons! And what is kind of interesting about the buttons...my grandfather (maternal) was a supervisor of a button factory in a small town along the Mississippi River...so my mother had oodles of boxes of buttons made in this factory...and many were pearl buttons made from the pearls of the Miss. River! ..

My guess would be 'English Toffee Assortment'. I say this because in the early decades of the twentieth century, England was noted more for toffees, than chocolates. My wife collects tins similar to this, and has one of like type, but much larger, and made by an Aussie company. Originally it had toffees in it, but my Mum used it for her button collection. I used to sort through all her buttons, as a youngster, prior to my school days.
