I needed to check on the family cemetery lot. I thought it was in Clinton, Massachusetts. It turned out to be in the neighboring town of Lancaster. We stopped first at the library in Clinton (upper right) and were sent to the Town Hall in Lancaster Center (lower right)

At Lancaster Center is also the finest remaining church building designed by Charles Bulfinch. It was having some refurbishing of its cupola.

It's on the US registry of historic places. I Googled Lancaster, Massachusetts Bulfinch church and found out quite a bit about it along with some better pictures without scaffolding. Thanks, Dagmar.

A very interesting church, here they are very different looking so it is nice to see something else. :))
Thanks Ardy.

Glad you are enjoying it, Mandy. It's not surprising about the place names as Massachusetts was settled by the Pilgrims and the Puritans - all from the UK. They brought the names with them. The difference was why they left England - at least originally.

Barb, South Hadley is in the Springfield area which is south and west of Lancaster which in about 12 miles north of Worcester. It's not very close The business part of he trip is now over and we start the fun part. I was surprised that the cemetery was so hard to find. I had always been taken there and not often since except for college I never lived in the area. I was born in Clinton but was taken to New York State when I was two months old. Thanks for stopping by.

Robbie, that church is still in use. It's considered to be one of Bulfinch's ten finest buildings. It was built in 1816. Thanks for your visit.

I'm looking forward to seeing more of your pics, Ardy. I am always fascinated by the town names in the US - as so many of them are the same as places in the UK... but obviously they are very different!

I'm so glad you're sharing your holiday pics with us, Ardy. My stepmother lives in Massachusetts (South Hadley, home of Mount Holyoke College, where she taught for many years). I must see if it's anywhere close to Lancaster. :-)
