I wasn't brought up with it, but I tried it a few years ago, and, as someone who hates sweet but loves savory/salty/umami flavors, I loved it, of course! But you're right, this is definitely something where you CAN have too much of a good thing!
If you like savoury things such as Twiglets, Marmite is great. The biggest problem people have is using it too thickly. They spread it on like jam and it is sooooo strong, almost burning the mouth. However, on hot toast with butter and spread sparingly, it is delicious. On a jacket potato when you melt butter onto the newly opened potato, a little Marmite mixed in, scrummy.
I think if you were brought up with it you will probably like it. But give it a try - but very little goes a long way.
