The houses were thus built on mounds. But there were more and more people and there was no more space on the mounds. Instead of making new mounds, people started to build their houses on stilts (poles). With a staircase they reached their home. Then came the dam, the flood danger was over. They built walls around the stilts (poles). In this way they created additional space. This space was for storage or extra rooms. The original living room was upstairs, so the stairs to the front-door remained. I will show you a few of this houses.

Please somebody tell me, do I have to use the word stilts or poles?

In SA we would use the word stilts, many houses along
the beach front, build on stilts, mainly for the view.
Very intresting houses.
Thanks for information and history.

Hi Jan. I agree and I'm glad the dam is there, so their problem is over. Did you see the photos from Alberta? Terrible. I'm glad Maria (Eaglefeather) live up a hill.
BS you have to talk a little harder, because I can not understand. lol. I like it, you pay attention. The houses have to be old. I can't find dates of most houses. But I found a few. One is of 1607 (very old) I found several houses of the early 19th century. So I think most houses are from that time.

Goede middag! I'm practicing pronouncing that and it's a good thing you can't hear me. How old are these houses? They look quite modern but they date back before the dam was built.

Charming place, I would hate to see a bad flood ruin all these wonderful places.

Thanks friends. A great use of that space. Indeed a smart idea. Sandy the roof material is very common in the Netherlands. It is made ??of stone. Baked pottery. They are flat curved roof tiles. They overlap, so the rain can not come in. Friends have a great day

Very clever use of space!! Thank you Ank for the wonderful picture and interesting information.

Very nice house and so interesting on how they evolved, the alterations are very complimentary.

Interessante uitleg. Nooit geweten. Bedankt. Als de ruimte beneden gebruikt wordt, zal het wel een heel groot huis zijn geworden.

No, Ank, it wasn't quite what I thought, but we have houses in the flooded places in the south of Jutland too, with entrances on the first floor, so I thought it was simply because of the danger of flooding!! But I didn't know that they started building the houses on poles!! Smart!! - and smart to use the space afterwards!! Thanks so very much for the information!!

chickiemama

Thanks for the interesting history Ank. I sure like the roof material they use.

I think stilts is the absolutely correct word, but poles or pilings have the same meaning. In any case, it doesn't matter. The picture is lovely and we know what you mean. Thanks for sharing.

Very interesting Ank, and what a good idea to make extra room underneath:-))
Love the lamp on the left:-))

I think you could use either word Ank - we know what you mean. Very interesting - thanks!
A lot of the early houses in my state used them too - so the hot air could circulate around the house better, and they didn't flood as easily.

I think here, ( USA), they might be called pilings. The dictionary says, pile "a long slender column (as of wood or steel) driven into the ground to support a vertical load".
But you don't have to use any of them we know what you mean. :)

Interesting Ank thanks. I would probably say stilts, but either way it is clear what you mean.
